What is a SSL Certificate?

SSL comes form Secure Sockets Layer, and represents, among others, the encrypted communication between a browser and a server that hosts a webpage / webapp. SSL certificates help to protect the transfer of sensitive information such as credit card numbers, passwords and usernames, consumer information and more over the internet.
